Welcome to the Youth Class - 6 through 12 years old

There are many reasons why parents wish to have their children take martial arts:

  • Although self-defense is usually the first reason given, it is our opinion that it could be the last. The emphasis of our program is on establishing discipline and courtesy in the child. Students will develop self-confidence, courage, awareness and grace. The structure of respect is built into martial arts instruction, with gestures of respect and polite greetings.
  • Our program builds confidence and character by providing the child with control over his or her body and an ability to stand up to negative peer pressure and other intimidating situations.
  • The movements of martial arts develop coordination and increase strength and flexibility, which are very important during the growing years.
  • The awarding of higher levels of belts gives the child a goal to work toward and a sense of achievement and accomplishment. The length of time for achieving belts can be from three to six months, therefore we award stripes on the belt as the child progresses between levels. Training for these belt reviews and passing them, enhances the child's ability to concentrate, plan for and triumph over learning hurdles. This is an excellent reinforcement of study techniques for school.
  • The positive environment that exists in our school provides motivation and an incentive to excel in both the martial arts and daily life. All students are taught to become positive role models. The camaraderie between students provides a sense of belonging to a positive group, which all children need.
  • The foundation of our program is its self-defense value. The physical exercises of martial arts improve motor coordination skills, and increase flexibility and aerobic capacity. Children learn to control their emotions and inhibit aggression and hostility. We are very careful to teach children that martial arts techniques are not to be used outside the martial arts class in any manner other than true self-defense. The result is a self-confident child, who does not need to bully or show off to other children.
  • And finally, martial arts is good, clean fun for kids -- a great way to burn off extra energy.

A parent's expectation in their child should not be too great. Just as it takes a long time for a giant oak tree to grow from a small acorn, such is the same with the little martial artist. The Youth Class is designed to introduce martial arts in a manner that is both meaningful and fun so that the student is self-motivated.

Also included in a typical Youth Class are stories to teach discipline, awareness of one's environment, the needs of others, and to reinforce a positive self image. A variety of exercises are used to build hand-eye coordination and motor skills and increase physical endurance and attention span. Rank advancement as well as achievement awards are given out and each child is evaluated on his or her own merits and accomplishments; attitude, effort, self-discipline, and physical prowess are all equally important.

What can you do to help your child? The most important thing is to keep the experience positive. The Youth Class is intended to be fun. Reinforce this experience by making each class a special outing. Positive motivation is the key to your child's success. You can help reinforce what is learned in class by showing your support and watching your child in class. Too much reward and praise can never be given to your child. Children want to please and with a little positive reinforcement they will work and try harder.

You can also help your child with their basic techniques at home. Watch the Instructor in class and have your child repeat the movements he or she has learned as closely as possible. You may make small corrections based on what you have observed. At the Youth level, it's important that the child learns and puts out positive effort, has fun, and develops friendship and leadership. Your child should practice daily what is presented in class so as to receive the maximum benefit from his martial arts training. This daily practice will build the student physically and mentally. We strongly encourage you to take classes with your child. You'll find it to be very rewarding as a complete exercise program, you will learn self-defense and have a creative way to spend time with your child.

If you have any questions, feel free to call me. I believe in the value of our program for all ages -- but especially for the young, who gain so much benefit from martial arts for the rest of their lives.

I appreciate the chance to work with your child.

Torite Jutsu: Traditional Kara-te
Martial Arts, Self Defense, Fitness, For The Adult

PRIMARY FOCUS OF CLASS

A fascinating study of pressure point self defense taught in a modern way emphasizing practical street self-defense and physical fitness.

Students learn a specific step by step curriculum from white belt (beginner) to Black Belt (advanced to expert). Taking only the best, most effective and practical techniques from Torite Jutsu, Tae Kwon Do, Ryukyu Kempo, Small Circle Jujitsu, Taijiquan, Modern Arnis and other weapons, the UMAC curriculum unifies the principles of these arts for a powerful and dynamic eclectic system.

All Torite Jutsu self-defense techniques are taught based on the science of acupuncture using kyusho jutsu (pressure point striking) and Torite (grappling and joint manipulation) and are designed to be the most effective means to end a confrontation in half a second. These moves are hidden within the traditional movements of the old martial arts forms or kata. It is through the scientific dissection of the old forms that a formerly secret level of meaning for kata movements is now available, easily able to be understood and performed so that no techniques are dependent of strength but of execution of technique.

For most students in the martial arts the meanings of the movements in their kata have not been explained. They can appreciate its beauty and power. They have a feel for its rhythms and dynamics. They may even catch some vague sense of its purpose, but without understanding the actual application of the techniques, they cannot truly comprehend the fullness of its meaning.

To the ancient masters of martial arts, form (kata) was the very essence of self-defense because they knew not only the outward form, but the application. This is why the martial artists of old always insisted that kata alone was sufficient, free sparring was not necessary.

Traditional martial art instruction was divided into three levels. There was shode, or basic teaching; chudem, or intermediate teaching; and okuden, or secret teaching. Only a very few were entrusted with the okuden material. Everyone else was deliberately excluded. There are high ranking martial artists who say they have been told that the highest level of kata was to discover joint and grappling techniques. They were never shown these techniques by their teachers. There are a few knowledgeable masters who are sharing these techniques in the United States.

For this reason I feel very fortunate to have the trust of these great teachers and you can be part of it during your studies with this school. It is my duty to pass them on to you and your opportunity to study them so that they will not be lost for future generations. Western martial artists (and most Easterner martial artists after WW II for that matter) have been training in the dark long enough. It is time for genuine understanding and comprehension of what the original martial art techniques were intended for.

Learn how to:
  • Stop confrontations in less than a second, and totally control an attacker twice your size!
  • Increase your speed and reaction time!
  • Increase your power and effectiveness!
  • Increase you focus and confidence!
  • Reduce stress and lose weight!
  • Control any self-defense situation with strikes, joint locks, submission holds, and touch knockouts!
  • Plus, enjoy a workout that will get you in great physical and mental shape!

Combat Applications Training (C.A.T.)
Street Self Defense and Fitness

PRIMARY FOCUS OF CLASS

Plain and simple the primary focus of this class is Self Defense and Fitness. If getting in the best shape of your life and learning a survival system dealing with personal safety issues in the context of defending against both armed and unarmed attackers is what you want then this is the class for you!

As a C.A.T. student you will be trained in and learn the absolute best parts of some of the greatest fighting styles out there, and combine them into one fluid, adaptable "system" that can be used by anybody - man, woman, or child... young or old... small or large... weak or strong. Your training will cover all 5 areas of real-world self defense: Kicking, Punching, Trapping, Ground-fighting, and Weapons.

This class is a modern, highly refined, street self-defense system. These techniques are battle-tested techniques emphasizing simple, practical movements, based on the body's natural instincts that can be performed by men and women of all levels of ability. They are designed to be utilized against muggings, street attacks, and sexual assaults. Therefore, the C.A.T. system was created with great importance placed on bringing students to a high level of skill and fitness in a relatively short period of time. There are no uniforms, no kata (forms), no sport or rules in the system. Why? Because anything goes when you are fighting for your life!

Students are instructed in state-of-the-art defensive principles that apply to a variety of threatening attacks that occur during commonly documented street crimes.

FIVE MAJOR AREAS OF THE C.A.T. SYSTEM

Empty Hand Striking Weapons

Because there are no rules when your life is in danger you must know how to effectively and powerfully deliver counterattacks to vulnerable target areas while standing or on the ground. The C.A.T. system will teach you how to utilize all your striking weapons: punches, kicks, elbows, and knees. You will also learn how to fight from various angles and distances to defeat an attacker and move to safety.

How To Handle Violent Empty Hand Attacks

Chokes, headlocks, bear hugs - violent attacks such as these can occur without warning. C.A.T. teaches you to respond to such assaults quickly and effectively, addressing the danger and counterattacking immediately to prevent further attacks. We train you from worst case scenarios and show you how to remove yourself from a dangerous position in the shortest possible time.

How To Handle Violent Handgun Attacks

The handgun is the most commonly feared weapon used by criminals. The C.A.T. system teaches you how to respond quickly and effectively to a variety of handgun threats: from the front and the back, from the side, and at various heights from the head to the stomach. Each technique is clearly broken down and shows how to reduce the line of fire, control the weapon, and how to deal with and disarm the gunman.

How To Handle Violent Knife Attacks

Knife attacks are lightning fast and brutal, and with the advent of tougher sentencing laws for gun-related crimes, they are increasingly common. Learn to recognize the basic ways an attacker will hold the knife. We will then teach you techniques to respond to such attacks delivered from a distance and from close range. Each exercise includes a defense, counterattack and, when possible, a disarming technique.

How To Handle Attacks When You Are Forced To The Ground

Learn ground-fighting skills specifically developed to allow a smaller person defeat a larger person by sophisticated application of leverage and technique. You will learn how to gain superior position on your opponent and applying a myriad of chokes, holds, locks and joint manipulations. In addition you will learn releases from holds and grabs while on the on the ground as well as leverages and takedowns.

How To Respond Mentally and Fitness

Self-defense is useless unless you learn how to effectively react under intense stress, such as a violent attack. We will teach you how and provide an exciting means to getting you in tremendous physical shape.

The 9 Deadliest Mistakes

...most people make in a real fight and how to avoid them!

In a real-life hostile attack, what most people think they know about personal safety will get them killed. But if you remember what I'm about to tell you, your chances of surviving and winning a hostile confrontation will be improved by at least 1,000% or more!

Let me tell you straight up: It isn't as easy as you think! What most people "think" they know about self-defense (or what they see in the movies) will get them seriously hurt if they ever get into a real-life, hostile confrontation with someone who's intent on doing them serious bodily harm. Don't fool yourself, even most so-called martial arts "experts or masters" out there (and especially their students) would lose in a serious hostile attack.

Those who are trained properly learn the absolute best parts of the great fighting styles out there, and combine them into one fluid, adaptable "system" that can be used by anybody - man, woman, or child... young or old... small or large... weak or strong. It should cover all 5 areas of fighting: Kicking, Punching, Trapping, Ground-fighting, and Weapons.

But that's not all. If you're not totally familiar with the 9 deadliest mistakes most people make in a real-life hostile attack, you'll probably end up making a few of these mistakes yourself - and getting hurt bad... or worse! So let's get started with...

1) Lack of proper skills in All 5 areas of Self-Defense

It doesn't matter who you are, or how many black belts you may have. If you're not thoroughly trained in ALL FIVE AREAS of real-life self-defense - you have a 90% chance of losing a hostile attack. Trust me you will use a little bit of each of the 5 areas of self-defense. Kicking and punching. Maybe a weapon or two. And many of the times, you're going to end up on the ground. If you don't know how to survive and win on the ground and your enemy does, YOU'RE IN TROUBLE! You're likely to suffer broken bones, internal bleeding, and maybe even get choked to death. The ground is the worst possible place to be when you don't know what you're doing.

2) Lack of proper conditioning

A real-life hostile attack is probably the worst thing that could ever happen to you. You'll need every fiber of your being in a do-or-die, gut wrenching battle. If you're not properly conditioned - physically and mentally - you won't last more than a few seconds. Once your body "shuts down" you turn into a quivering mass of worthless jelly. No matter how proficient you are in martial arts, you'll get hurt bad because you will be exhausted and helpless.

Proper physical conditioning is a prerequisite for self-defense. Within a month or two we can get you in shape very fast. Conditioning is not an option!

3) Expecting the enemy to cooperate by using the fighting styles you're familiar with!

We know that this may sound ridiculous but lots of people who spend hours training in martial arts actually expect their enemy to use the same fighting style that they do or to cooperate like their friends do in class. THIS WILL NOT HAPPEN!

The way you spar in the dojo with someone who uses your same style is NOT the way it happens in real life. Criminals don't fight by the rules. They don't give you slow-motion punches or kicks. They don't avoid kicking you in the groin, or biting you, or puling your hair! They don't care about what color belt you have.

They're out to hurt you - and they'll do anything to accomplish that goal. The beauty of learning C.A.T. is that these techniques will work against anything. It's a combination of the best fighting techniques in the world.

You have to adapt like water in a real-life hostile attack. Pour water into a round container, it becomes round. Pour that same water into a square container, it becomes square.

It's the same principle in a life threatening situation, you must become like water. Remember ALL attacks involve one or more of the 5 areas we have already mentioned. C.A.T. shows you "building blocks" for all 5 areas and shows you how to adapt so that everything works for you, no matter what you're against.

4) Using an out-dated, unrealistic fighting style against today's best arts!

It is not our position to "knock" other martial arts. They all have something very valuable to offer. Contrary to what some would believe, we owe them a debt of gratitude for getting us where we are today, and they are better than nothing. The unfortunate thing is that they are all ancient arts, developed for the warriors of those days. Those conditions and circumstances no longer exist in this day and age.

How about those pretty, camera friendly, flying kicks? They were developed to knock men off of their horse. What is likelihood of being attacked by a band of thugs on horseback... that's OK you don't have to answer.

Breaking Boards? Sure, they were needed to pierce through wooden chest plates when you lost your trusty sword. I haven't seen a wooden chest plate lately. So don't waste your time practicing it.

How about those fancy combinations used in tournaments? Sure they score great points....but your opponent is bound by the rules. There are NO RULES and anything goes when you are fighting for your life!

Listen: C.A.T. is all about using ONLY that which works best. Nothing else. No sentimentality, tradition, or mystery. Just super-effective fighting techniques designed to defeat the bad guys who make the mistake of messing with you.

5) Trying to imitate Hollywood actors when you're in a real-life Streetfight!

Once again you may find this silly, but it happens. People watch Chuck, Jean-Cleaude, Jackie, etc. on the silver screen or TV and then go practice what they think they've seen. What a terrible mistake!

Those staged movie stunts would never work in a real-life streetfight. So as they say, "don't try this at home." Train for reality, not fantasy.

6) Losing your temper instead of causing the other guy to lose his!

This is a big one. The moment you lose your temper, your ability to defend yourself properly and skillfully is severely compromised. Lose your temper, and you'll forget everything you've learned... you'll make stupid mistakes... and worst of all, you'll succumb to your fear.

You must do whatever it takes to make your opponent lose his temper.

That's what gives you the advantage over anybody you'll face - even if they are bigger than you, or if you're outnumbered 3 to 1.

7) Not committing to a definite plan of action and sticking with it to the very end!

You will get hurt by one thing more than any other... hesitation. In the real world you have to be mentally and physically ready to run or defend yourself. Once a clear decision is made you stick with it and be fully committed to a particular course of action.

8) Not being aware of your environment!

Real-life hostile attacks are hardly ever one-on-one. Sometimes your opponent will have buddies standing around. He may have started the fight, but once everyone sees you winning they might jump in to "help" him.

But if you are aware of what is going on around, your environment can not be used against you.

Don't just concentrate on your attacker, take in everything around you. Assess the whole situation, check for weapons that you could possibly use.

REMEMBER: You are correct if you adapt yourself to your environment. Take it a step farther, make your environment adapt to you. FIGHT SMART.

9) Wishful thinking - hoping someone will come along and bail you out.

You find yourself in a bad situation and 2:00 in the morning. No cellphone. You have a few blocks to walk for help. You see a couple of unsavry characters in local gang garb start walking toward you. What do you do?

Most people will panic and hope that someone will come along and save them. It is not gonna happen. Don't talk. Don't show fear.

When you train in C.A.T. your chances of survival and winning a hostile confrontation will be improved by at least 1,000% or more! You will learn how to defend yourself in that kind of situation. You don't have time to waste on outdated ineffective moves!!
